Trendy Colors in 2009
Decorating your home should be current, comfortable, and totally you! Color evokes feelings and emotions and is the easiest thing to update in your home. Remember the joy of that new box of crayons- it was all about the fabulous color choices. Some color choices work for one person, while others capture someone else’s fancy. Forecasting color for homes is really a trend that follows the fashion world. Colors that look good on people are generally easy to incorporate into your home’s décor. As with anything else, take these ideas and creatively use them in your own space!

Neutrals and the colors of nature. Brown is still a very strong color, but it is shifting in tone a bit for the household. Chocolate brown is being toned down into mocha or a latte’color, spicy shades like cinnamon and more neutral taupes. Big ticket items are seeing a surge in the neutral areas- due to people keeping those sofas longer and wanting to be able to work with the color for a while. With the softer tones of neutral, green is very good. Eco friendly choices are making people “think green” and they are using the color in their homes. Fresh, vibrant greens and limes are the new color in the natural family. An enduring trend for color is one of sand and surf- blues and browns. Soft blues paired with more neutral browns are still going strong. They are used frequently for bedrooms, living areas, and bathrooms.

Black and white. After seeing a huge push for these colors in Europe- they are finally making their way over the pond! This is a strong color statement and is very versatile. Keep the scheme clean and simple with the use of just those two colors or play around with accessories a bit. Make black and white pop with an equally strong accent color of hot pink or lime green. It’s an excellent color combination for modern or traditional rooms like kitchens and living spaces. A black and white entry is very striking!

Gray and violet. These colors have made a strong emergence as new “neutrals”. Gray can be used anywhere brown was used in the past. Choose warm grays if the tone of your home is more nature inspired or cool ones to work with blues and purples. Violet is replacing the softer shades of lavender and blues in bedrooms and baths. Pair it with white for a strong statement.

Use these color combinations to inspire your next project. Take black and white to the next level with hot pink or red. Change out your sand and surf scheme with a soft palette of taupes and periwinkles. Try painting the ceiling a pale blue to evoke the sky in that room! Make a splash with violet paint in a powder room- accessorize with a strong white. “Think green” , both ecologically and in color, and use lime green for a fresh look anywhere in the house. Creativity with color knows no bounds. Use these trends as a jumping off point and get coloring with this “new box of crayons”!
